Summer Relaxation

Summer has a way of nudging us toward stillness — longer days, warmer light, the gentle permission to pause. And for association professionals juggling high expectations, ambitious goals, and often limited bandwidth, that pause isn’t just a luxury — it’s a necessity.

The summer issue of FORUM Magazine will be out in just a couple weeks! This issue’s cover story, “Summer School for Association Professionals,” we explore how summer can be a season of professional renewal — a chance to sharpen your skills, reconnect with your purpose, and invest in your growth. But here’s the truth: You can’t pour into your development if your own cup is empty.

Wellness and professional advancement are deeply intertwined. When you prioritize your wellbeing, you show up with more clarity, more creativity, and more capacity to lead. So before you dive into your next course, event, or networking opportunity, take time to reconnect with yourself. Here are five simple wellness strategies to help you recharge this summer — and return to your professional journey feeling grounded and inspired.

1. Embrace Micro-Moments of Rest

You don’t need a weeklong vacation to reset. Small breaks throughout the day — five minutes in the sun, a quiet cup of coffee, a short midday walk — can work wonders for your mood and focus. The key is consistency. Build in pauses the same way you schedule meetings or deadlines.

2. Make Movement a Habit

Summer is the perfect season to move your body — not out of obligation, but as a way to clear your mind. Whether it’s an early morning walk, a bike ride through your neighborhood, or yoga in the park, physical activity can help reduce stress and improve cognitive function. Bonus: It also boosts your energy for that afternoon webinar or brainstorming session.

3. Protect Your Downtime

Set boundaries around your time — and honor them. Designate at least one evening a week as technology-free or schedule a full day for non-work activities. You don’t need to earn rest; you need to respect it. The more you practice disconnecting, the more present and productive you’ll be when you’re “on.”

4. Feed Your Curiosity

Not all self-care is quiet. Sometimes, it looks like picking up a new hobby, visiting a museum, or reading something totally unrelated to work. When you nourish your creativity, you feed your problem-solving and strategic thinking, too.

5. Reflect, Don’t Just React

Use summer to check in with yourself. Are you fulfilled in your work? What have you accomplished this year — and what’s next? Journaling, coaching, or simply unplugged time outdoors can help you tune into your inner voice and recalibrate your goals.

You First, Then Forward

Your professional development matters — and you matter. As you dive into all that Association Forum offers this summer, from online education to in-person events, remember that the strongest leaders lead from a full tank.

Taking care of yourself isn’t a detour from your career path. It’s how you stay on it, steady and strong.
