Alyssa Rojo, MSN, RN
Nurse-Research Analyst, American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology
How did you come to the association industry?
I am a new association professional, working at AANA for close to 6 years. My background and training as a nurse led me to pursue my MSN with an emphasis in healthcare informatics (e.g., research, electronic medical records in hospitals, etc.). My specific passion is research, so I was looking for a research nurse-type position after graduation. The stars aligned when I saw AANA’s Research Analyst position (which later evolved to the Nurse-Research Analyst position I hold today), looking for a nurse with research experience to help disseminate the most up-to-date information to our members so that they can provide safe and accurate patient care.
What is your favorite part of your job?
The people! I love the people that I work with from so many various backgrounds, and I love our members. As a fellow nurse, I feel a kinship to our nurse anesthetist members and I feel proud that I can support them on behalf of their association.
Tell us about a time that your involvement in this community had an impact on your career or life.
I have loved being involved with the 2023 and 2024 Holiday Showcase Program Advisory Group. Being a non-traditional association professional, this involvement has introduced me to other association professionals both in the advisory group and while attending Holiday Showcase. I have been able to see the value and the impact of our work. When I was in nursing school, I never dreamed that I would be a part of the association world and I didn’t know how important they are to boost the work of their members. Now on the other side of this coin, I feel I can work better and more efficiently for my members with this knowledge.
Tell us something about you that we wouldn’t find on your LinkedIn profile.
I am cheating a bit since I recently made a post about it, but I am a big reader. I run the AANA Staff Book Club and with this employee engagement, I meet different staff members that I wouldn’t normally work with or speak to. This has helped my work since I am more aware of the work my colleagues do and can help bridge gaps. I just started my own bookstagram and one of my happiest spots is when my kids are in bed and I am curled up with a good book and a glass of wine!
